To use our gadget properly, we need some application to help us. With internet, our laptop and phones can connect to each other. Internet has been part of our live. We can dig information, search for news, download movie and song, and download applications from the internet. But besides the benefits from internet, there are people who want to take advantage from internet to their own and risking another internet user to fell into it. Virus, trojan, spying, and many others are become challenge to internet users. Many website that seems to be secure and viruses free, but the truth is the virus are hiding in the ads, on the files we downloaded, or if we click button on the website. There are a lot of platforms provide application and games store, such as Google Play Store, Microsoft Store, et cetera. But, sometimes it charged us money to download applications and games, or maybe we cannot save the downloaded application files to install it later, and many other reason. So, people start to search in the internet, and when they find a website that says you can download application, they are maybe insert viruses to the website, advertisements, or even malware to the file we downloaded. So the example, when you click the button with “download” text on it, maybe it’s not the real download button, it’s maybe redirect you to a advertisements or website that contain virus. So how do you get rid of it?

1. Know what you want to download

The first step is know what applications or games you want to download. Download application or games that has been verified safe by experts or other internet users. And don’t get distracted by offers from the website that look suspicious. For the example, if you want to download VLC Media Player, make sure the website you searched is provide that application. Beware of website that offer another type of application that may contain viruses. Sometimes the website offer you similar applications and says that it has more complete feature or more popular than application that you want to download. You need to pay attention to this, because sometimes these kind of offer may contain trojan virus, spying app, or maybe dangerous file or application. Also

2. Always prioritize downloading from the official website of the application provider or the official platform store

The most safe place to download applications and games are from the official website provider. If you want to download Adobe Photoshop, download it from Adobe official website or verified store like Microsoft Store. The official website always give you the virus free application and the official application. It won’t give you any pirated applications or games, or even virus infected application. So, always prioritize download applications and games from its official website. Beware of fake website that claim to be the official website for the apps and games. How to check that it is not the real official website? One, check the name of the website and the address of the website. The official website usually has simple web address and names. For example, Adobe official website is www.adobe.com and Microsoft official website is www.microsoft.com Both has simple web address, and check also their footer or help section to see copyright, terms and conditions, privacy policy. If the website has all of it, that is the official website.

3. Check website security and the connection

If you’re not downloading from the official website, or maybe doubt the safety of the official website, you must check the security of the website. First, if in the address bar there are a lock logo, that means the websites are have high probability to secured through SSL/TLS encryption and have purchased a certificate to verify this fact. And then, check if the website addresses started with https. Websites that uses https protocols are way more harder to attacked or hacked. But that doesn’t mean that the website is 100% safe. The website maybe still insert or hiding a virus through it’s page. If the website has no https protocol or lock symbol, or even have the warn sign, that means you must be really careful on this website.

4. Search if the website is safe.

Double check if the websites are safe with search it on Google or internet forum like Quora, Reddit, and StackOverflow. Ask in the forum or search if someone has asked it, does the website that you want to download from it whether is safe or not.

5. Avoid ads, search download link

Now you have sure that the website you have been clicked are safe in general. Now, you need to find out where is the download link button and avoid fake download button. In application and games unofficial websites, or unofficial software marketplace, they’re gaining profit from ads. So they placed the ads almost everywhere, and sometimes because the advertise corporation want us to click the advertisement button, so they make the design look similar to the real download button. If we misclicked the download button, they will redirect us to the new tab and give us the offer from the advertising company, or even worse, redirect us to website that contain malware. So, here is the tips on how to check if the download button is real :

1. Check if there’s a box around the download button like this, and also if you notice there is the close button on it, that means it is not the real download button. Or if you notice there is a text “sponsored by”, or the advertisement provider such as Google Ads, that means the button is not the real download button.

2. Hover to the download button, and wait until on the left bottom of the page to show the url or website address.

3. Right click on the download button or link, then press copy link, and click new tab, and paste it by right click on the address bar and click paste, or press the Ctrl + V on keyboard. Check if the url is the real link to download the application.

Now, how to check the url or the address is the real download page?

1. After the address come up, check if it’s the real download link. The real download link usually start with the name of the website, for example in this website named kolompc, and when I hover it, it shows the download link with start of kolombox, that is the website to download the file.

2. Usually some websites use the cloud storage to store the application and games that we can download. It’s usually started with the cloud provider name. Several well known cloud storage provider is : Google Drive (drive.google.com), MediaFire (mediafire.com), Uptobox (uptobox.com), et cetera.

3. The advertisement link usually started with weird combination of letter, number, and symbol. Or it usually started with the advertisement name, for example Adfly (adf.ly) and Google Ads (googleads.g)

6. Check if the file you downloaded is safe

If you have done downloaded the application, to see if the downloaded file is safe and not a viruses, this is how to check it

1.  Check the name of the file, Is it same with the application or game name that you want to download. If it’s contain weird combination of word, number, and symbol, don’t open it

2. Check the downloaded file’s format. If you download application and games for laptop or computer, the extension usually .exe or .msi. For Android, it usually .apk or .apks, and for Iphone it usually .ipa.

3. Check the size of the downloaded application or games. Search on Google what is the actual file size of the application or games, and If there’s a huge difference on number, then don’t open it.

4. Lastly, check the file with your antivirus is it safe or not.

7. Installation procedure

If you’re download the application or games from unofficial store, then to prevent unwanted malware or application installed, do installation with custom installation.
